Rosacea is a common skin disease that is typically characterized by redness on the nose and cheeks. Some patients also experience symptoms of rosacea on the forehead and chin. While the redness can be constant, it may also present as flushing from certain triggers. Rosacea can be a source of uncomfortable embarrassment for patients, especially when accompanied by red bumps, eye redness, and irritation. Though it can affect people of any age, it is most common in people with fair skin between the ages of 30 and 50 years. There are 4 different types of rosacea, which is why it is important to be properly assessed. Causes
The causes for rosacea are not fully understood, however it is thought that it could be related to improper function of the immune system. Though the main cause is unknown, we are aware of triggers that may cause rosacea flare ups:
- Spicy foods
- Sun, wind, or extreme temperatures
- Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
- Emotions such as excitement, stress, or anger
- Exercise
- Certain blood pressure medications
